17- Why Do Our Cells Stop Listening to Insulin?

Remember that I said earlier that insulin is like a key?

Let’s chat about what can happen over time.

Imagine you’ve lived in the same neighborhood for years.

At first, every time someone knocks on your front door, you answer immediately.

But after hearing knocking over and over and over again all day long, eventually you stop responding as quickly.

Something similar can happen with our cells.

When insulin is constantly being released, because we’re grazing all day, drinking sugary beverages, eating lots of refined carbohydrates, sleeping poorly, dealing with chronic stress, or becoming less active, our cells may gradually stop responding as well.

So, your pancreas keeps producing more insulin.

And it works. For a while.

The amazing thing is that your body is trying to protect you.

It’s adapting. It’s doing exactly what it was designed to do.

The challenge is that, over months or years, constantly needing more insulin can make it harder for our bodies to access stored fat for energy.

This is one reason weight loss may start feeling much more difficult than it used to, because your body has adapted.

And just like the body adapted one way. It can often adapt back.
